most frequently asked questions we receive regarding how to become an
instructor.
Can
I teach a course on any topic?
You are free to choose
the topic you wish to teach on Gurukol. Please refer to our restricted topic list,
however, for details on the topics that we do not accept.
Do I
have to pay any fees in order to become an instructor?

instructor on Gurukol. Instructors are paid according to a revenue share model
outlined here.
When a student buys your course on our marketplace, revenue is shared between
you and Gurukol, according to our revenue share model.
What
approval do I need to get started?
No approval is needed to
get started. You can start creating your course via this link.
Please note, in order to create paid courses, you'll need an active PayPal account.
Before your course is
published on our platform it will need to meet our course minimum requirements.
Course Quality Checklist, we've broken down Gurukol’s guidelines
for the individual components of an ideal course into two segments: Required and Recommended.
Required items
on the checklist are items that every Gurukol course, obviously, must have.
We’re talking about things like HD video, good audio, 5 lectures or more,
and at least 30 minutes of video content.
At least 30 minutes of video content
At least 5 separate lectures
Valuable educational content (Learn more)
HD video quality (720p or 1080p) *
Audio that comes out of both channels and is synced to video
Audio quality that is not distracting to students*
A high-quality course image in line with Gurukol image standards
(min. 2048x1152 pixels)
A well-written course title and subtitle that includes relevant
keywords
A brief, honest, well-written course description
Clear course goals, target audience, and requirements that are
easy and understand
A credible and complete instructor bio and profile picture.
Recommended items are those
that make good courses, well, great. Great courses blow students away with lots
of instructor engagement, or super helpful supplemental resources or innovative
approaches to presenting the material. Courses that include the recommended items
really stand out and engage students.
A 2-5 minute introductory lecture tells
them what to expect in the course and each section
You challenge them with a quick win action
within the first 3 lectures (or first 15 minutes)
You share useful content early in the
course, avoiding spending too much time on background
Each section has a clear goal or primary
skill, with all lectures building to reach that subgoal
Each lecture has 1 main concept and message
(not 5!)
Each section has at least 1 learning
activity, such as an exercise, project, or quiz to give students a chance to
apply what they’ve learned
Lectures are between 2-20 minutes in length
(exceptions: yoga, code along, or meditation)
Lecture formats vary throughout the course.
Too much screencast or talking head can
become tedious.
Choose your lecture format based on the
material you are teaching.
Article (text) Lectures and practice
activities are great too.
They relate to the instructor. Talking head
lectures build rapport, particularly early in a course.
It’s easy to find the resources they need.
Provide all needed resources, downloads, and links for each practice activity
(ex. worksheets, source code, practice files, etc.).
How
will I get paid?
Instructors can connect a
PayPal account to their Gurukol account. You are paid on a monthly basis (more
details on our payment schedule for instructors be provided).
What’s
the general structure of a Gurukol course? What is the primary teaching method?
A standard Gurukol course
is video-based. Courses must have at least 30 minutes of video content and at
least 5 lectures or learning modules. Additional teaching tools (like
assignments, quizzes, and coding exercises, etc) can be added to create a rich
learning experience for students.
For courses regarding
certification preparation, we also offer instructors the ability to create a
Practice Test course. These courses are comprised solely of practice questions.
Are
there any requirements that my course must meet?
Yes. Courses must have at
least 30 minutes of video content and at least 5 lectures or learning modules.
In order to ensure that
students have great learning experiences, we also have a Quality Review Process
that every course goes through.
How
do I get my course materials on your site?
Since we function
primarily as an on-demand, video-based platform, you’ll need to upload your
video files directly to Gurukol. In other words, students must be able to view
your course lectures on the Gurukol platform.
Does
Gurukol retain exclusive rights to my course if I sell it on your platform?
No. Our marketplace model
means that when you publish a course on our platform, you retain all the rights
to your content. You simply grant us a license to host the course and
make it available to our users, and to advertise your course on our platform
and on third party services.
These license terms are
outlined in detail in Gurukol’s instructor
terms. You can also offer your course on other
services, but we ask that your course is never offered for a lower price than
on Gurukol. Note that if your course is included in the Gurukol for Business content collection, per the Promotions
Policy, there may be additional distribution
restrictions.
Can
you tell me more about the existing demand for my course topic on Gurukol?
With our Marketplace Insights tool,
we offer robust reporting on student demand, search volume, and revenue for a
particular topic to help you decide what course to teach. If no data exists for
a topic you’re searching, it likely means that there’s an opportunity to fill
this gap in the Gurukol marketplace and you should get started right away.
While success as an
instructor on Gurukol is not guaranteed, this tool offers some powerful data to
help you make your decision.

Gurukol promote my course?
